Green Tree Python - Morelia viridis - "Chondro"
Related Species- all of Morelia
Range- Australia, New Guinea
Diet- Lizards, rodents, small marsupials, birds
Captive Diet- Neonates- pinkies and fuzzies Adults-jumbo mice-medium rats. Be sure to feed them later in the day when all the lights are almost ready to go off since they are nocturnal.
Housing- Tubs, tanks and specialty caging works just fine. Be sure that they are not too vented or else that will equate to a dryer climate. For neonates a 1' wide x 1' long x 1' high enclosure is fine and for adults a 2' wide x 3' long x 2' high is fine.
Substrate- I would recommend paper towel or peat moss. Both handle humidity well.
Water and Humidity- Be sure to include a water bowl. These guys move around at night and will drink from it. You should also spray them about every other day but more often when they are ready to shed. Make sure that the humidity level does not get too high because of possible fungal infections on the skin as well as respiratory problems that can occur from it. A good level is about 50%-68%.
Temperature- 80-84 degrees fahrenheit
Perching- Since these guys are arboreal, be sure to provide them with things to perch on. Things like PVC piping work well because they can easily be cleaned. You can also use things such as commercially made perches and grape vine.
Variety- This species is highly variable. They can range from green all the way to blue. As babies they go through a transformation from baby colors to adult colors, colors vary from locale and from animal to animal.
Temperment- These guys generally are not tollerant of handling and can be defensive. I suggest only handling them if you have to due in part to their delicate frame.
